A brief description about me and my beginnings
Photography began for me in school in 1983 when I was given my first camera, not long after that I had a fully equipped darkroom in which I spent many hours developing black and white prints. With a keen interest in school, photographing mostly sports and more fine art work I decided to study photography after school this however never happened as I then attended Cape Tech doing engineering. I did however continue with photography, my first big event was at the age of nineteen at the opening of the Western Cape Training Centre, by then SA president. I continued to photograph people and some band photography and sports at the time as well. After completing army and studies and some work experience in sales and also teaching, I started a small business in 1993.
Jacques Bartie Photography was founded in 2003 as a second business, as being a business owner I had the time to follow my dream and other opportunities, the photo bug had never left me. Today it is a fulltime business.
The core of the business started with photographing event work in many different areas, Ive never been scared to undertake any opportunity. I undertook a lot of corporate work including events, awards, conferences and company profile shots ie headshots. Within a year of doing corporate type work I also entered the wedding market which has also continued up to present.
I have had 7 years experience in commercial publication , a very big portion being in the educational sector producing briefs for our local text books. I was also the Cape Town based photographer for a JHB based up market magazine producing briefs from, portraits of local professionals and public figures, to art and decor’ and interior spaces fulfilling briefs as specified.
Core work today includes corporate, headshots, portraits, events, conferencing, awards, wedding, couples, family, commercial, publication, product and more.
I am a very easy going person, always open to discussion to obtain an understanding of what the client needs. I am also very much a family man which has probably had a key influence in how I approach life and people . I am very much my own worst critic and believe in offering 110% for every photoshoot however small.
I was joined by my son Alex back in 2010 who works with me for weddings as 2nd shooter and assistant, getting those different angles and viewpoints which I love, together we make a great friendly team.
